Folks, the moment this entire trash fire of a year has been building up to is almost here. The 2026 midterm elections are happening tomorrow. At least they’re supposed to. I’ll believe it when I see it.

There’s been lots of talk about Trump and the Republicans not accepting the results if they lose a bunch of races by the cavernous margins they deserve to lose by. Reporters asked about that at Joint Base Andrews in Prince Georges, Maryland right before the President departed for a trip to campaign for some bigot in Texas, not sure which one.

If you’re not in a video watching mood, just know that he says he’ll only accept the results if they’re “honest” elections. Coming from Trump, that sounds as comforting as a wool sweater in a sauna. Unfortunately no one asked him to elaborate, which is a shame, because I would spend pay-per-view money to hear that lunatic’s definition of honest.

If that response from Trump makes you feel better about how the midterms are gonna go, you’re either dumb or a New York Times op-ed writer. Everyone else knows what “if they’re honest” means. It means “if Republicans win.” That will be honest. Anything else is a sprawling Deep State conspiracy to make it seem like Americans don’t love pedophiles and record high gas prices caused by pointless wars launched at the behest of a genocidist.

Trump made the “it will be honest if Republicans win” point clear in a Truth Social post about Minnesota Senate candidate Michelle Tafoya, who seemed cool back when she was just doing football stuff. Here’s what Trump said about her (probably because he’s tryna fuck):

But nowhere is the “it’s only honest if Republicans win” mandate on display more than in the Alaska Senate race between incumbent Republican Dan J. Sullivan and Democratic challenger Mary Peltola.

Wait! Sorry, I got that wrong, voters of Alaska. Dan J. Sullivan is a different Republican who is also on the ballot. The incumbent is just regular Dan Sullivan.

This confusion is the impetus for a DOJ lawsuit that seeks to stop Alaska from certifying election results if and only if Republican Dan "Regular" Sullivan loses. If he wins, the election is legitimate. If he doesn’t, shenanigans are afoot and an investigation must be launched.

The argument is that the other Dan Sullivan, who is running with no party affiliation, is a secret Democrat who just got on the ballot to sow confusion among voters. And yeah, that’s probably true. But it’s also not illegal and it sure as shit isn’t anything Republicans would be above trying if they thought it would win them an election. When you’re trotting out the mom who disowned her kid for getting molested by her stepdad as your new mascot it’s pretty clear anything is on the table with your team.

Alaska uses rank choice voting in their elections, and that presents an extra special problem for Republicans. There are four candidates on the ballot, the Dans, the Democrat, and some other rando Republican. Voters don’t just vote for one candidate. Instead, they rank the candidates in order according to who they most want to win. If just a fraction of the dunderheads who will be voting on Tuesday rank the wrong Sullivan at number one, it could be enough to swing the race in favor of the Democrats.

All that said, this lawsuit is a bit of a dirty trick in and of itself. This case has already been litigated once and made it all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court, who ruled in favor of keeping both Dans on the ballot. That ruling was handed down in June, which calendar nerds will note was months ago. This new lawsuit is actually just an appeal of that ruling. Filing that appeal is a thing you would normally do immediately ... unless you’re trying to time it in a way that breeds confusion and chaos come election time.

In theory, this lawsuit should not work. The argument Republicans are making is the same one Al Gore and his team of lawyers tried to make in 2000 in Florida. That state used weird butterfly ballots that Democrats believed were responsible for thousands of registered Democrats mistakenly voting for noted racist piece of shit Pat Buchanan.

If you look at the ballot in question, it sure does look confusing.

And guess what? The Supreme Court did not care in the slightest. The argument was that they couldn’t just assume everyone who voted for Buchanan intended to vote for Gore and change the votes. If a couple thousand voters dropped the ball, they were just gonna have to live with it.

That’s what Republicans are saying should happen here. Votes cast for Dan J. Sullivan should go to Dan “Not J” Sullivan instead. In a different version of the world, I’d say there’s no way the Supreme Court is gonna rule any differently this time than they did in Florida in 2000, but that was a different Supreme Court. This one is stacked with loyalists who would feed the Constitution to a paper shredder if they thought it would guarantee four to twenty more years of Trump.

Another lawsuit filed in October by the government is asking a judge to bar the state of California from counting mail-in ballots that the always trustworthy Trump administration has identified as coming from “likely” noncitizens. The suit claims the state failed to meet a 48 hour deadline to review a password-protected thumb drive containing 20,000 names of potentially unlawful voters.

If nothing else, the way the thumb drive was delivered made it unlikely that California could comply with the request. It arrived as nothing more than a USB drive along with a yellow Post-It note with a password scrawled on it. In an interview with the Associated Press, David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation and Research said most election officials’ cybersecurity standards would not permit that type of review. Or, as Becker put it in the interview, “election offices do not just stick thumb drives into their technology, for very good reason.”

The lesser jackboots are doing their part to sow mistrust in the upcoming election also. Like how Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin posted a letter back in August pointing out known weaknesses in voting machines used in this country. Specifically, some of the component parts inside the machines are made in China.

It’s a point he’s brought up previously, including at a July press conference where he said that “foreign adversaries have parts that are vital in our voting machines.” That’s true! But it’s also true that at no point has any evidence of manipulation of American voting machines by foreign actors been presented. Nevertheless, at the end of his letter, Mullin says “election security is national security” and vows that DHS will prioritize election security.

That’s concerning if for no other reason than because when Trump wanted to seize voting machines after the 2020 election, then acting DHS Secretary Kenneth T. Cuccinelli proved to be the country’s last line of defense by refusing to take part in the scheme. The chances of Markwayne Mullin being similarly hesitant are slim-to-none. If Trump asks him to seize voting machines, he’s at least gonna try to do it.

With all of the insanity surrounding American elections these days, I don’t understand why anyone shows up to vote in person on election day. I suppose if you must then you must, but I cannot fathom a situation where “do it whenever you want” is the less convenient option compared to “stand in long lines and do it on this one specific day only.”

Yet and still, millions of citizens will hit their local polling places tomorrow to cast their votes, and a whole lot of people are gonna be watching. The DOJ is launching its largest-ever election monitoring effort, sending observers to all 50 states. Meanwhile, Democrats and groups on the left are expected to have tens of thousands of observers in place to observe those observers.

Unfortunately, it seems like this influx of looky-loos has left one group that hoped to be on hand to watch left out in the cold. Breaking a two-decade tradition, observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) were disinvited from this year’s midterms by the Trump administration, putting America on par with upstanding regimes like Belarus and Russia in rejecting international observers from elections.

What’s especially crazy about the OSCE being banned from monitoring our elections is that the United States is one of the 57 members of the OSCE. It’s an international body that was created after the Cold War to “promote democracy” in former Soviet states, whatever that means.

So, it’s anyone’s guess as to exactly how Republicans will try to steal this election if they lose, but disinviting foreign election observers from a group we helped start is a pretty obvious sign that they’re going to try *something*.
